Product Description
"If you are a project manager looking for a technology-based, easily implemented, and usable solution for project communications, document management, and general project organization, this book is for you!" -Susan Weese, PgMP, President and Founder, Rhyming Planet
Most companies don't understand SharePoint's power, and use it simply to share documents or spreadsheets. This hands-on book demonstrates how SharePoint can also help you organize and manage complex projects. With SharePoint for Project Management, you'll not only understand how to apply common and practical project management concepts in SharePoint, you'll learn how to build a Project Management Information System (PMIS), customized to your project, that can efficiently coordinate communication and collaboration among team members. With this book, you will: - Learn to apply key project management techniques by leveraging SharePoint as a PMIS
- Track a case study that illustrates the circumstances and processes of an effective SharePoint PMIS
- Appropriately define access permissions for project stakeholders and team members
- Centralize project documents and keep track of document history with version control
- Automate project reporting mechanisms and generate on-demand status reports
- Track project schedules, control changes, and manage project risks
- Integrate project management tools such as Excel, Microsoft Project, PowerPoint, and Outlook
Each chapter includes activities that let you practice what you learn. Most SharePoint books are either too introductory (for end users), or too technical (for system administrators). SharePoint for Project Management is just what project managers like you need to learn how to harness the organizational abilities of this powerful software.

Practical Uses for SharePoint - Finally April 29, 2009 Kevin Hughes (Overland Park, KS United States) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I've worked with the SharePoint product line for almost 10 years and I think it is growing into a fabulous platform for collaboration and communication. It is so full of features, options, and capabilities that many of the users I've worked with in the past have just given up for being completely and utterly overwhelmed. There are many books, training classes, blogs, web sites, etc. that will tell you "How to" do things in SharePoint. But, try to find resources on "What do I use it for" and you'll be amazed at just how few results you can find that actually tell you anything.
Dux has done a great job in giving a practical example of an "every day" use of this wonderful product. I thought the book was very easy to follow with a good mix of project management methodology and theory along with a healthy helping of how to apply it to SharePoint. The workshop exercises were easy to follow - even for my most techno-challenged PMs. And it reminded them a couple of times that they needed to actually follow good PM methods they had "forgotten".
In all, I recommend this book to anyone that uses, administers, designs, develops, or architects in the SharePoint world. Even if you don't learn anything about SharePoint or Project Management, it is a great resource to show to others.
I also hope this serves as an example of what is really needed in the SharePoint arena - a gap other authors will hopefully fill - Practical uses for SharePoint.
Thanks, Dux.

Great Introduction to SharePoint June 8, 2009 Tiffany Songvilay (Houston, TX USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Simply the best introduction to SharePoint that I've ever read. Five of the nine chapters are devoted to speaking plainly about what elements make up a site. There are pictures on every page which makes this paperback book a very quick read. The last four chapters talk about creating lists that are specific to project management like risks and change requests but I think that even people who do not manage projects will benefit from seeing an example of when to use a SharePoint site all the way through from creation to archive. While this book is not going to teach Project Managers anything new about PMP methodology, I think it's real value lies in helping any member of a project team to easily grasp the concepts of why SharePoint is a great tool for evaluating risk, reporting progress, and helping everyone on the project stay on task.
So Easy a 'User' Can Do It February 12, 2009 Jerry Baum (New Castle, PA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
We are working on a new implementation of SharePoint for our Corporation of around 1,000 users. My first objective once SharePoint was installed was to put together a good project template to help track the SharePoint project as well as other major projects currently under way in our IT department. "SharePoint for Project Management" was the perfect forum for guiding me in developing and implementing a project management template for our users that is comprehensive yet intuitive.
If you're looking for fancy code and SharePoint 'under the hood', then this is not where you want to go. This book is a plain language look at how SharePoint can be best utilized for Project Management and how to implement it best in your organization. "SharePoint for Project Management" is perfect for IT SharePoint Administrators and Project Managers alike.
My only issue was the first copy of the book I received had a broken binding; but the Author, the Publisher and Amazon.com were all wonderful in making sure I got a new copy. If I could give it more than 5 stars I would!

Excellent quick start for using SharePoint to manage projects and teams March 20, 2009 Martin Shinn (Los Angeles, CA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a great book for those who want to get a quick start in using SharePoint to manage their projects and teams. The explanations are clear, to the point, and written from the perspective of a real-world project manager.
What I like best about the book is the series of workshops that accompany each section, as they provide immediate hands-on experience with the concepts and features that have just been covered. Using this method, even a newcomer to SharePoint will be able to quickly acquire the practical knowledge that will allow them begin using SharePoint as a powerful project management tool.
The author's conversational style, real-world tips and "SharePoint Dojo" case study make this an easy and fun way to learn. For those who want to get themselves and their teams up to speed quickly on using SharePoint for their projects, this is a definitely a great way to go!
The only "Getting up and going"-book you'll need December 4, 2008 Mathias Karlsson (Stockholm, Sweden) I received the book this Monday morning. And had read it through by Tuesday evening... It is brilliant! Crisp clear instruction, a great balance between explaining background and step-by-step showing how to do it. The very personal language also makes it easy to read and fun.
What I think I like best is the down to earth "I have done this myself" approach. What I mean is, one can really relate to the reasoning and it is based on reality not on fancy theory on how things should be witch makes it very trustworthy. Anyone can start using it straight away.
I didn't work my way through each and every exercise but a lot of them and based on my experience of SharePoint the rest looks similarly easy to complete. It'll be the x-mas gift from my company to a number of key customers and contacts.
